The Pancake week in Russia

Maslenitsa is a veritable treasure trove of indigenous traditions. Many rites were connected with the main treat – pancakes. During the holidays it was possible to try different types of this dish, because every family recipe was special and was passed from generation to generation. The first pancake was considered a memorial, it was posted on the window for the repose or gave to the poor.

Riding downhill on a sled was also part of the ritual. It was believed that the child’s family, who will travel with slides on the other, will be able to grow the longest flax. Fist fights, capture snow FORTS and other fun stuff also had ritual significance, it could be very different depending on the region.
