The ancient Slavic holiday of Maslenitsa is seven days of fun, sledding, competition and, of course, enjoying delicious pancakes. Scope and content it is often compared with the European carnivals, the time when you can immerse yourself in the vibrant whirlwind of popular culture.
In addition, Carnival is a symbolic farewell to inhospitable in the winter and a joyous spring. Until the seventeenth century this was the equivalent of the modern Christmas celebrations. We are pleased to continue our tour through Prague autumn, and here we are again at the old town square, where twenty-seven white crosses remind about one of the saddest events in the history of the Czech Republic. In 1621 there was executed twenty-seven leaders of the Estates rebellion against the authority of the family of Habsburg and king Ferdinand II. Popular rumor has it that their ashes buried in the Church of the Holy Salvatorelli or in the walls of the Tyn Church.
