International film festival is the largest festival in Odessa
Odessa – a Ukrainian seaport and a beautiful resort with a rich cultural history and long-standing cinematic tradition. In 1894, a year and a half before the famous Lumiere brothers, Odessa engineer Joseph Timchenko presented to the public the projected “Moving pictures”. In 1907, the city opened the first on the territory of the former Russian Empire Studio, and since then, nearly 700 films were made there. Sergei Eisenstein, Alexander Dovzhenko and Dziga Vertov made Odessa a legendary place in the history of Ukrainian cinema.
POTEMKIN STAIRS – OPEN-AIR
Place, have owned the history of world cinema, famous in the world of the great Sergei Eisenstein in the film “the Battleship Potemkin”. At the festival, the famous staircase becomes a huge open-air cinema with views of the Black sea, collecting about 15 thousand spectators. Accompanied by a Symphony orchestra over the years there have been shown ‘city Lights” Charlie Chaplin, “metropolis” by Fritz lang, “Sunrise” by Friedrich W. Murnau, “Blackmail” Alfred Hitchcock and, of course, “the Battleship Potemkin” Sergei Eisenstein. Saturday’s screening works of world classics in Symphony orchestra – the biggest event of the Odessa international film festival.
In International competition includes films from around the world, mostly international or national premieres. Program is focused on so – called “the art mainstream”, i.e. films with high artistic quality and accessible to the widest possible audience. Since 2012, the audience become the main Odessa international film festival, as the Grand Prix is awarded on the basis of the results of the audience voting. The international jury awards winners in the categories of “Best film”, “Best Director” and “Best actor”. Non-competitive program includes retrospectives, compilations of the latest films from different countries, exclusive premieres and festival hits.
National competitive program consists of newest movies produced in Ukraine or in co-production with Ukraine. Awards for Best Ukrainian feature and short films presented annually at the Odessa international film festival the jury of the National competition program. 2014 national competition jury also presents the award for Best acting.
The development of the professional film community in Ukraine – one of the main missions of the festival. Under the Professional section of the producer is Pitching (a competition for the best film project), presentation of paintings at the stage of Work in Progress, as well as panel discussions and round tables devoted to the acute problems of development of the industry. In the future, Odessa also intends to become the largest co-production market between the States of Europe and Russian speaking countries. As part of the Odessa film festival is a local market, the main purpose of which – the development of productive relations between the Ukrainian distributors and distributors.
One of the largest projects of the Odessa international film festival – Summer film school – operates throughout the 9-day festival. In 2014 600 students and moviegoers attended the screenings, master classes and creative meetings under this section. Among the masters and guests of the school – international stars and film industry professionals such as Peter Greenaway, Krzysztof Zanussi, John Malkovich, Roger Corman, Darren Aronofsky, Emir Kusturica, Peter Webber, Jos Stelling, Jiri Menzel, Sergei Loznitsa, Kira Muratova, Todd Solondz, Stephen Frears, Geraldine Chaplin, Vadim Perelman, Aidan Turner, Timur Bekmambetov, Alexander Rodnyansky and Andrey Plakhov, Naum Kleiman and others. Also at the festival are held annually special education section, such as “the Director+Producer”(2014), film critics School (2012-2013) and Scenario workshop (2011).
Festival Palace from 2012 is in the building of the musical Comedy Theatre.M.Water. The capacity of the hall, which pass through a competitive shows and gala premiere – 1260 seats. Here are the service accreditation, ticketing, guest services and the media centre. Big festival square with a fountain and a cafe area and restaurants collects all guests in an informal setting at the main entrance to the Palace. The second important festival venue – cinema “homeland” having two screening halls at 180 and 520 seats. Professional section is located on the territory of the Odessa film Studio, and the events of the film Market held in the multiplex “cinema city”.
