10 best festivals in the world

Around the world hosts many major festivals and celebrations that attract not only the huge number of local residents, but also many tourists. It is understandable, because it’s hard to think of a better way to feel the atmosphere and culture of a country than to visit traditional holiday. Some of them are not only surprisingly large, but also extremely unusual in themselves.

Mardi Gras, USA

During the festival, there are costume balls, parties, parades and parades. The most interesting of them are considered the Bacchus parade, each platform which represents some perverse entertainment — Dating, drinking, cards or something, and the parade of the Mardi Gras Indians, on platforms which you can see is absolutely amazing costumes.

If you want to see the real Mardi Gras, the festival is better not to go into the French quarter and garden district and on Charles Avenue. However, you should bear in mind that all the good places there’s usually busy for six hours before the parade.

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The carnival in Rio every year attracts more than half a million visitors from all over the world and is considered the biggest carnival in Brazil.

The carnival begins with the coronation, during which the mayor passes the reins to the King Momo, selected from all residents of Rio for weight (in any case not less than one hundred pounds) and the ability to dance the Samba, the main dance of the carnival. On all five days of the carnival the city really is subjected to the control of the new king — except for the police.

The carnival for all five days filled with loud music, lots of girls dancing Samba in a very open and beautiful costumes, street festivals, beautifully decorated parades, games and masquerades.

The carnival takes place just before the beginning of lent and was conceived as a way to give people a last opportunity noisy fun before the long days of abstinence and repentance.

The carnival in Rio

Kanamara Matsuri, Japan

This holiday is another proof that Japan is a very special country, which should not be assessed from the point of view of generally accepted norms. The name of the festival “Kanamara” is translated into Russian as “iron penis” and, in General, does not have any hidden meaning, but directly refers to the object of celebration. However, according to one version, it’s just a celebration of fertility and procreation.

The celebration begins in a small temple in Kawasaki, near Tokyo. The temple was built in the Edo period on donations prostitutes and intended for them to come and pray for protection against syphilis and other diseases that these girls risked becoming infected.

The festival lasts seven days, and on Sunday, the last day, is arranged the procession, which sweeps through the city many phalluses of various colors and sizes (some of them are so high that in order to raise them, you need more than ten people), and nearby you can find a huge number of shops selling Souvenirs.

Semana Santa, Guatemala

In Antigua Guatemala you can see one of the most spectacular celebrations of Easter. The holiday begins on ash Wednesday, the first day of lent, and lasts one week, during which the streets, strewn with a carpet of flower petals and beautiful patterns of colored sand are arranged processions and parades with figures of various saints. Almost the entire city is draped in black crepe and from everywhere came the smell of incense. During the festival there are performances that illustrate the sentencing and crucifixion of Jesus.

All representations made so skillfully, and the scope of the festival is so great that can not fail to touch even the most convinced atheists.

Palio, Italy

Palio is one of the main holidays in Italy. This is a Grand horse race held in Siena twice a year — 2nd July and 16th August.

The tradition of spending in city horse competitions originated a very long time, in the XIV century. Their main feature is that they are not at the track, as usual, but right in town, on the main square. Another feature is that these jumps are totally alien to notions of fair play. Riders jostle, shove and build obstacles to their opponents, causing excitement among the spectators the order increases (as, unfortunately, and frequency of accidents).

Compete in the races contardi representing different districts of the city. Each of them has its own emblem and each puts one rider. The most successful of them became contardo goose, having already more than 60 victories, and, contrary to the title, snails, who won more than 50 victories.

But the races themselves, how fascinating they were, the last only a few minutes, and the rest of the time guests are entertained with jugglers and acrobats, parades and rich feasts.
